Sapporo's distinct four seasons makes it a work of art in itself, but if one looks past Sapporo's every changing exterior one will find a trove of galleries, museums and parks filled with art that will match any city. This page by no means tries to be the one page stop to Sapporo's art and parks, but hopes to entice one to visit and discover for themselves. Below you can find a guide to Sapporo's parks, museums and galleries.



Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art

This museum's displays focus maily on paintings scuptures from artists associated with Hokkaido. There are however special exhibits held thoughout the year.

Sapporo Museum of Sculptue
This gallery exhibits artwork by Shin Hongo. Around 100 works are on permanent display. Other exhibitions are sometimes held here.


Sapporo's peoples love for for the great outdoors means that the city is dotted with numurous parks. All parks listed here are public parks (koen) unless otherwise noted. Throughout most of the parks are sculptures, statues and varies other artworks.

Moerenuma Koen
Moerenuma Koen (LT- Moere lake park)is park and art on a grand scale. It was officail opened in July 2005. Moerenuma Koen was designed by Isamu Noguchi.

Nakashima Koen

Nakashima Koen sits at the south end of the city centre, 15 minutes walk form Odori or accessible from Nakashima Koen Station on the Nanboku subway line. The park has a lake in the middle of it where you can rent boats during the summer months. Throught the park there are many places of culture significant and at the south end lies Kamokamogawa water playground.

Odori
Odori Park runs East to West from W1 to W14 and is 0 on the north south axis. It is home to fountains, playgrounds, art, the TV tower and is where people gather for Sapporo events such as the Suumer Festival (beer garden), Snow Festival ,and Yosokoi Soran. From November to February the Sapporo White Illumination is in Odori Koen, 57,000 light bulbs light up Odori Koen from dust to 10pm.

Art Park
Sapporo Art Park or Geijutsu no Mori (LT- The Forest of Art) is located 20km south east of the city centre. You can get to Geijutsu no Mori by subway and bus, car, taxi or bike. The park is set in a lush green garden and is home to an outdoor sculture garden, the museum of contempary art, craft halls and studios.
The outdoor sculpure garden is diffinately worth a visit. There is a charge to enter the scuplture garden.
